Hey fellow truck enthusiasts, Ive got a few questions about the hitch on my 86 and wondered if anyone could help clarify them. The hitch that is on it now, is butt welded to the frame, Ive never seen one like this, and what kind of weight do you think it would be good for? obviously, its not a DRW 1ton, but I figure its good for a few thousand pounds.
Ive got some minor rock rash on the bottom of the hitch itself, but it seems to still be good. Its a standard 2" opening.

The welds look decent, but im no expert. The pics were taken with my phone, sorry if they arent the best. Let me know what yall think, if this hitch is any good. I was planning on taking some angle steel, and bolting it as a "brace" between the arms of the hitch, and the frame itself, over where it is welded.

I would not be afraid to put an 8k trailer on that. Just check the welds when you stop and do your tire and strap checks. It looks pretty solid. I would give it a shot.
It does look like good welds.
I would probably look inside the frame rail with a mirror and check there for rust and cracks as well. The frame will probably give out before the hitch that was added.

Thanks Traveler. This won't be a dedicated tow rig of any kind, but I wanted to have an idea of what the hitch was good for. I might pick up a trailer sometime down the road, who knows.
