Car tires on a trailer.

Here's another age old discussion. "Is it ok to run car tires on a trailer?"

I've always run used car tires on my trailer and the only problem I had was one blow out in 6 years. But my trailer dosent get used all the time.

My reasoning is that here in NC the sun and lack of use will kill a tire long before it wears out. So instead of spending $100 or more a piece for ST tires I go to my used tire guy and spend $25-35 mounted and balanced.

I did recently switch from 15" rims with a P235/75/15 rated at about 2000lbs, to 16" rims with LT245/75/16 load range E tires rated to 3000lbs. The 16's are easier to find these days.

What does everyone else think.

Ditto on the load range E tires. We do the same thing. The trailer handles so much better and we always have plenty of spare tires laying around.

The only downfall is the trailer height goes up a little when switching, but worth it.

We use, and have used car tires for years. They work and are cheap, but we did go through a bunch of them.

It is difficult to find 16" rims though for all trailer sizes. On one trailer we are currently running 31x10.50 15's Load range D and they are amazing compared to even ST rated tires.

We have spent some big money for our enclosed trailer tires, but still pop them frequently. We will probably do something similar there in the future.

I run "car" tires on most of the trailers. Have done it for years- and will continue to do so. One exception is the newest enclosed (came with STs). I seem to only have issues with the "trailer" tires. I suppose it is my luck as much as anything. I just watch load ratings & inflation or lack of :)
I dont know why I tend to be drawn to tire threads...

I know this is way late but I can finally respond. I towed home a K2500 Suburban home on my homebuilt POS trailer with 15" car tires without a single problem. Nice and comfy tracked just fine empty and loaded (minus the incorrectly loaded vehicle).
